Another reason that I started this site was to help advocate for black dogs in our shelters. Black Dog Syndrome is alive and well, and it is sad. Black dogs are euthanized at a much higher rate in kill shelters than any other color animal. Major is a rescue that our trainer saved from an abusive situation, and look how THAT is turning out.

I volunteer time and my photography skills to local shelters to photograph their animals and help get them adopted. Good photography brings people in to the shelters and gets these animals into new homes. As long as we can get people coming in, we can get them to take some amazing animals home, even if it wasn’t the initial animal they saw.

Today I had the pleasure of going to Best Friends Animal Society’s Mission Hills location to help them photograph their dogs. They must have known I was coming as they brought me  black dog after black dog! If you are looking for a companion, they have some amazing animals available for adoption, and they all come spayed/neutered and up to date on all their shots at a very reasonable cost.

Now, imagine my surprise when they brought out Stella, and Stella was a black lab! I need to start carrying scent samples with me so I can see if any of these dogs are motivated by scent 😉 Stella appears to be about 1.5 years old, and has had at least one litter, but will be spayed before leaving the building. She was very sweet, and could use to add a couple of pounds.

Right after Stella, they brought out Rio. Rio is a handsome boy that has already been neutered. Rio gets along great with other dogs and people, we had him playing in the yard with another dog. His kennel card said he was 7, but my guess is he’s about 4-5 by looking at him. Rio may have some flat coat retriever in him. He is stunning.

Next up was Heather, who appears to be a lab/staffie mix. Another sweet, good looking girl. She looks like she would be an amazing exercise/running partner.

Then they brought in Dulce. This little guy melted my heart. He is still under a year, and was the sweetest thing ever! I thought he could star in the movie “Honey, I shrunk the lab”, and look at those ears!

And finally, we have Scruffy. This is the one that my wife would let me come home with 😉

I am sure that any one of these dogs would be an amazing addition to your home. After all, Blackdogsrule! And you know what they say, black never goes out of style.
