Once again, my track record for bursting into tears while talking about how amazing these dogs are, and all that they do for our family, is at 100%. If you were there, it was disjointed at best, and cut short as I couldn’t get through it. I always feel bad as I struggle with these. But I will give myself 1 compliment. I am passionate about what these dogs are capable of doing, both for diabetes, and for the general well being of their families. This is what my speech was supposed to sound like:

20131110-IMG_0734With all the recent talk about my daughter and Raven competing in rally, we get asked a lot about why we are using Raven and not Major. I have explained this in a couple of different places, but I thought I’d do a post about it here.  More »

20140628-IMG_2755We just spent the weekend competing at the Long Beach Queen Mary dog show. Stella and Raven are going for their AKC Rally Advanced title. They got their Rally Novice title a month ago, and this was their first event going for Advanced. The main difference is Advanced is all off lead.

We were there with several other families, trainers, and dogs in the Canine Hope for Diabetics program (more on why I think this is important later). As you can tell from the pictures above, these dogs, trainers, and families (including my 11 year old and 2 teenagers) did a fantastic job. I got so much joy (and yes, a bunch of nervousness) out of watching my daughter compete with Raven this weekend. My heart was bursting with pride the whole time. More »

1900525_779684465393121_654466269_oStella has spent a lot of time this year working with Raven in rally class. Memorial day weekend she will go to her first competition with Raven. A few of you have asked, “Why is Raven doing rally, and not Major?” The answer is simple, and it’s complicated. 🙂 More »

1781540_779684362059798_694877495_oStella and Raven have been working hard together at Rally over the past 6 months, and we continue to work our dogs daily. I have been working Raven off lead (no leash, all vocal commands) for several months, and at home in the safety of our backyard, with little or no distraction, Stella has been doing off lead work with her too.

20140216-IMG_9480If you follow us on our Facebook page, you know that most every Sunday afternoon we pack up the pups and head to a rally class with other members of Canine Hope for Diabetics for their weekly hosted training session. So what exactly is rally? And what purpose does it serve?

IMG_0159signwebWe went to a rally class last night. We haven’t been in awhile, summer has been busy, and it’s tough to get there on a Wednesday night after work (it’s about 50 miles away). Dorrie (from Luke & Jedi) called me and said she was heading there and offered to pick us up. I jumped at the chance because I wanted to gauge how Astro is doing. I know how he works for me, but is the training transferable? Will he willingly do it for someone else? Will he alert in public? How about some new distractions? So off to rally we went! You say you don’t know what rally is? More »
